COULD WORLD WAR II HAVE BEEN THE "GREAT TRIBULATION"?

BACKGROUND SCRIPTURES
IN
THE GOSPELS

In the New Testament Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, Jesus was asked by His disciples about the signs that would accompany the end of the age and time of His return. Since they were on the Mount of Olives at the time, the conversation is referred to as the "Olivet Discourse". You can find that discourse in (Matthew 24-25; Mark 13; and Luke 21), with those portions relevant to the Great Tribulation reading as follows:

(Matthew 24:1-3)
1 Then Jesus went out and departed from the temple, and His disciples came up to show Him the buildings of the temple.
2 And Jesus said to them, "Do you not see all these things? Assuredly, I say to you, not one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down."
3 Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, "Tell us, when will these things be?
And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?"

NKJV

Jesus' response at first described the general nature of troubles leading up to the End Times, then He focused their attention on a time when an Abomination of Desolation and Great Tribulation would occur,  seemingly  just prior to His apocalyptic return.

(Matthew 24:15-30)
15 "Therefore when you see the
'abomination of desolation', spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place" (whoever reads, let him understand),
16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.
17 Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house.
18 And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes.
19 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days!
20 And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath.

21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be.
22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect's sake those days will be shortened.

23 Then if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or 'There!' do not believe it.
24 For false Christ's and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.
25 See, I have told you beforehand.
26 Therefore if they say to you, 'Look, He is in the desert!' do not go out; or 'Look, He is in the inner rooms!' do not believe it.
27 For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.
28 For wherever the carcass is, there the eagles will be gathered together.
29 "Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

(Luke 21:20-27)
20 "But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near.
21 Then let those in Judea flee to the mountains, let those who are in the midst of her depart, and let not those who are in the country enter her.
22 For these are the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.
23 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! For there will be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people.
24 And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away captive into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
25 "And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring;
26 men's hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of heaven will be shaken.
27 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

NKJV

The Matthew and Mark scriptures pertaining to the time of the Abomination of Desolation and Great Tribulation are almost identical, so only the Matthew text is provided above. The Luke scripture that relates directly to those in Matthew and Mark is shown because it is worded differently. Although it omits the terms Abomination of Desolation and Great Tribulation, it speaks of a military siege against Jerusalem followed by an extended period of distress to befall the Jewish people, then also concludes with the Lord's return in power and great glory. Thus it deals with the same overall time period in question.

WORLD WAR II WAS A "PROPHETIC EVENT"

The following techniques are available to us to detect the occurrence of a prophetic event, so let's apply them to World War II.

  1. Elul 1 was the same Levitical date recorded by the prophet Haggai when he began to receive prophecies from the Lord pertaining to the period following the Babylonian Exile, but then reaching forward to Israel's blessing in the End Times (Haggai 1.1).

  2. September 1 (Elul 1), 1989 also began a 2300 day period of the same length as that recorded in (Daniel 8.14), reaching to Hanukkah in Jubilee year 1995.

  3. Finally, September 1 (Elul 1), 1989 was the first of a whole set of time periods of the same lengths as those recorded by the prophet Daniel having to do with the 70th Week, all of them within the 1988-1995 seven-year timeframe ending at the advent of Jubilee year 1995.

Jews being executed

WORLD WAR II WAS AN
"ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION"
AGAINST THE JEWS

Did the "soul" and vile intent that motivated the character of World War II fulfill that required to be associated with the Abomination of Desolation of the Olivet Discourse?

Colliers Encyclopedia of "The World's Great Events" lists the first century destruction of Jerusalem as one of the great tragedies of human history. Even so, that tragedy pales to insignificance when compared with the misery and death that accompanied the Nazi regime's treatment of the Jews during World War II. Although their "final solution" of extermination did not even begin until 1942, almost 6 million Jews were murdered in Nazi death camps by the end of the war. This is verified by recorded Jewish populations in Europe which dropped from 9.48 million in 1939 to 3.78 million in 1948, even though only a few hundred thousand Jews had managed to escape during the war, or migrate to other nations following it. Although sometimes overlooked in the slaughter, millions of Christians were also murdered during that same period. Therefore, in a short span of less that three years, the Jewish and Christian populations were decimated on the entire European continent.

In fact, it is probably safe to say that the efficiency of the Nazi extermination machine had increased so dramatically near the end that if it had been permitted to continue for even a brief time, God's Covenantal people would have been essentially eradicated from Europe. Therefore we need not look beyond World War II to find the fulfillment of the above text "And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect's sake those days will be shortened."

To underscore the fact that Nazism, as conceived and executed, was not simply a war against all humanity, but was specifically a venomous discharge intended to annihilate God's Covenantal people, consider the following remark by one Jewish historian:

"The actual annihilation of the Jewish population was one of the main ideological and military objectives of the German Nazified war machine. And this objective was to a large extent achieved."

Finkelstein

It must be added that whether by malevolent intent or simply as a by-product of Hitler's perverted strategy for a "millennium" of Aryan supremacy, a completed Holocaust would have thwarted Israel's restoration back in the Land, thereby defeating God's Plan for His Millennial Kingdom. As such, there appeared to be a sinister intent behind World War II that had the imprint of Satan himself. His evil seemed to be embodied in the unadulterated savagery perpetrated especially against those very people for whom God has reserved an earthly inheritance during His Millennial Kingdom.

If we are willing to consider World War II as the embodiment of that final Abomination of Desolation identified in the Olivet Discourse, it may be contrasted with the first century Roman "abomination" in a way that is oddly paradoxical. The Roman "abomination" intended to forever destroy Israel, and at the time, apparently succeeded in that aim by eradicating that nation from their Land at the advent of the Times of the Gentiles. Likewise, the Nazi "abomination" had the objective of annihilating the Jewish people, thereby preventing another Israel, yet its strategy backfired, for their extermination efforts had the net effect of putting the Jews back into the Land near the completion of the Times of the Gentiles. Here are two military operations conceived by man's wisdom with the very same objectives, yet they produced opposite results. Can we detect in this reverse effect the hand of God moving to bring about His ultimate purpose for these people?

Nuremberg, 1945

WORLD WAR II WAS THE "GREATEST TRIBULATION"
THE WORLD HAS KNOWN

Can the overall intensity and scope of World War II fulfill the provisions of the Great Tribulation described in the Olivet Discourse? Consider the statistics of the biggest killing spree in the history of mankind, by nation:

NATION

TOTAL DEATHS (CIVILIAN/MILITARY)

ALLIES
Belgium 90,000/110,000
Netherlands 200,000/6,000
U.S. 0/408,000
Britain 100,000/350,000
France 450,000/200,000
Yugoslavia 1,000,000/400,000
China 850,000/1,350,000
Poland 6,000,000/600,000
Soviet Union 7,500,000/7,500,000
AXIS
Italy 70,000/150,000
Japan 500,000/1,500,000
Germany 1,470,000/4,750,000
Czechoslovakia 250,000/30,000
Austria 125,000/280,000
Romania 300,000/340,000
Hungary 450,000/400,000

Two points may be inferred from these statistics.

Nonetheless, as severe as World War II was, it is agreed that a full-blown nuclear war among nations  would produce far more outright deaths. However, in terms of the "tribulation" it would impose on those living, instant vaporization might seem preferable to sitting in a death camp for a period of years, witnessing members of your family systematically be put to death in the most heinous ways, and wondering when you would suffer the same fate. In any event, we will not ruminate about a hypothetical future scenario, but simply set forth World War II as a legitimate candidate for the Great Tribulation of the Olivet Discourse.

BACKGROUND SCRIPTURES
IN DANIEL

In addition to the Olivet Discourse in the New Testament Gospels, the prophet Daniel has much to say about the subject of the Abomination of Desolation and Great Tribulation. Bible historians have been able to parse the historic portions of Daniel, relating them to known events. Of particular interest at this point in our study is the text shown below in (Daniel 11.35-12.4), because it appears to deal with a person and an event contemporary with the subjects under consideration.

These Bible historians have been able to connect the details in the first part of chapter 11 to the history of the Grecian Empire beginning with the rise of Alexander the Great (Daniel 11.1-2), the record of the divided kingdom following his death (Daniel 11.3-20), and the career of Antiochus Epiphanes IV who rose to rule over the Syrian portion of that divided kingdom in its latter years (Daniel 11.21-34). Then starting with the verses below, a "king who shall do according to his will" becomes the subject of the prophecy.

(Daniel 11:35-12:4)
35 And some of those of understanding shall fall, to refine them, purify them, and make them white, until the time of the end; because it is still for the appointed time.

36 "Then the king shall do according to his own will: he shall exalt and magnify himself above every god, shall speak blasphemies against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the wrath has been accomplished; for what has been determined shall be done.
37 He shall regard neither the God of his fathers nor the desire of women, nor regard any god; for he shall exalt himself above them all.
38 But in their place he shall honor a god of fortresses; and a god which his fathers did not know he shall honor with gold and silver, with precious stones and pleasant things.
39 Thus he shall act against the strongest fortresses with a foreign god, which he shall acknowledge, and advance its glory; and he shall cause them to rule over many, and divide the land for gain.
40 "At the time of the end the king of the South shall attack him; and the king of the North shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter the countries, overwhelm them, and pass through.
41 He shall also enter the Glorious Land, and many countries shall be overthrown; but these shall escape from his hand: Edom, Moab, and the prominent people of Ammon.
42 He shall stretch out his hand against the countries, and the land of Egypt shall not escape.
43 He shall have power over the treasures of gold and silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt; also the Libyans and Ethiopians shall follow at his heels.
44 But news from the east and the north shall trouble him; therefore he shall go out with great fury to destroy and annihilate many.
45 And he shall plant the tents of his palace between the seas and the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and no one will help him.

12:1 "At that time Michael shall stand up, The great prince who stands watch over the sons of your people; And there shall be a time of trouble, Such as never was since there was a nation, Even to that time. And at that time your people shall be delivered, Every one who is found written in the book.
2 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, Some to everlasting life, Some to shame and everlasting contempt.
3 Those who are wise shall shine Like the brightness of the firmament, And those who turn many to righteousness Like the stars forever and ever.
4 "But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book
until the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase."

NKJV

It is most natural to suppose that this is simply a continuation of the story of Antiochus Epiphanes, whose character traits and military actions can be related to the preceding verses. Indeed, Matthew Henry who was a 17th century Bible expositor, takes this view as seen by his interpretation of verses 44-45 above.

When he (Antiochus Epiphanes) finds himself perplexed and embarrassed in his affairs he shall go forth with great fury to destroy and utterly to make away many. The story of this we have 1 Macccabees 3:27, etc. What a rage Antiochus was in when he heard of the successes of Judas Maccabaeus, and the orders he gave to Lysias to destroy Jerusalem. Then he planted the tabernacles of his palace, or tents of his court, between the seas, between the Great Sea and the Dead Sea. He set up his royal pavilion at Emmaus near Jerusalem, in token that, though he could not be present himself, yet he gave full power to his captains to prosecute the war against the Jews with the utmost rigour. He placed his tent there, as if he had taken possession of the glorious holy mountain and called it his own.

Matthew Henry

However, a majority of other conservative Bible scholars see at least some of these verses as having a dual fulfillment, describing another Willful King who will rise during the End Times to carry out a military campaign similar to that described for Antiochus. The argument for this view stems from the fact that (Daniel 12.1) refers to this same period as "a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation, even to that time". Since this time of "Jacob's trouble" is said to surpass anything ever to occur since there was a nation and to be followed by a resurrection, they see the final fulfillment of this Willful King to occur during the time of the Great Tribulation described in the Olivet Discourse.

Adolph Hitler

THE CHARACTER OF ADOLPH HITLER
WAS LIKE THE "WILLFUL KING" PROPHESIED FOR THE END TIMES

The execution of World War II may be laid directly at the feet of one man, Adolph Hitler. The August/September, 1989 World War II anniversary issue of U.S. News and World Report was titled, "Hitler's War Against the World." The report said, "millions struggled in it and millions died in it, but in many ways it was the war of just one man. Hitler made it, he fought it, he determined its barbaric character, and his will continuously enlarged and sustained it from the beginning almost to the very end."

We have just observed the way in which the Willful King in the above text is seen by many conservative scholars to be not only a description of Antiochus, but also of some End Times personality. In light of this, it is revealing to reflect on the similarity of the character traits between Antiochus Epiphanes and Adolph Hitler:

For these reasons, it is perhaps not altogether surprising that an abomination of desolation originally associated with Antiochus' terrible persecution of the Jews, was repeated in an even more intensified form by another Abomination of Desolation during the World War II Holocaust.

THE MILITARY CAMPAIGNS OF WORLD WAR II
WERE LIKE THOSE PROPHESIED
FOR "JACOB'S TROUBLE" IN THE END TIMES

The correlation between World War II and Daniel's description of Jacob's trouble to be fulfilled during the End Times provides more evidence that it was the Abomination of Desolation and Great Tribulation depicted in the Olivet Discourse. The inset map shows Germany, with England and France to the North and South of each other. A summary of the primary military campaigns conducted during World War II is provided in the following chart, placed alongside each of the prophesied verses in Daniel. Notice how the prophetic description accurately depicts the chronology of the entire World War II campaign conducted by Nazi Germany, identifying England as the "kingdom of the North" and France as the "kingdom of the South".

MILITARY CAMPAIGNS
 DIRECTED BY THE "WILLFUL KING"
"AT THE TIME OF THE END"

MILITARY CAMPAIGNS
DIRECTED BY ADOLPH HITLER
DURING WORLD WAR II

At the time of the end the king of the south shall attack him; and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, horsemen, and with many ships (Daniel 11.40a)

Just two days after Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, both France and England declared war on Germany. The ensuing battle for central Europe involved principally the "southern kingdom" of France and the "northern kingdom" of Britain. Although it involved fierce land battles, Britain's powerful navy with many ships was employed effectively in the overall offensive.

and he shall enter the countries, overwhelm them, and pass through. (Daniel 11.40b)

From September, 1939 to June 1940, the German juggernaut rolled over Norway, Holland, Belgium, and Luxembourg. After the surrender of the Belgium army, a carefully devised strategy enabled the German army to surround the French and British armies at Dunkirk, guaranteeing their defeat. Although an interservice squabble between the German army and air force high commands allowed much of the British army to escape by sea, the French army essentially dissolved, forcing their unconditional surrender on June 22, 1940.

He shall also enter the Glorious Land, and many countries shall be overthrown; (Daniel 11.41a)

As the German armies swept South following the fall of France, they linked forces with Mussolini in Italy, pressing into the Baltic nations of Hungary, Rumania, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Greece, and Crete, to a presence in Palestine ("the Glorious Land"). Although history records no actual military combat in Palestine proper, Palestinian Jews did side with the allies, while Palestinian Arabs collaborated with the Nazis.

but these shall escape from his hand; Edom, Moab, and the prominent people of Ammon. (Daniel 11.41b)

The Arabs living to the east of Palestine, occupying the former regions of Edom, Moab, and Ammon, were British protectorates at the time, but they also aligned with the Axis powers and were not attacked or occupied.

He shall stretch out his hand against the countries, and the land of Egypt shall not escape. He shall have power over the treasures of gold and silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt; also the Libyans and Ethiopians shall follow at his heels. (Daniel 11.42-43)

The Axis North African campaign began in December, 1940, when the Italian army drove into Libya defeating the British before invading Egypt. In the campaigns that followed, Egypt quickly came under the occupation of German and Italian military forces. In the spring of 1941, German Field Marshall Rommel engaged the British in intense tank battles across the Libyan desert. American troops first entered the war in the fall of 1942 when they, with the British, battled the Germans in Morocco , Algeria, and Western Africa. During this conflict, there were forays as far South as Ethiopia when British Colonel Wingate defeated the Italians, restoring Haile Salassie to his throne.

But news from the east (Daniel 11.44a)

The German invasion of the Soviet Union had begun a second front to the East in June, 1941, with a 3,000,000 man blitzkrieg. As the German army knifed into Russia's heartland during the summer of 1942, fighting in North Africa was also cresting. This unfortunate timing from Hitler's point of view, coupled with the United States' entry into the war, and the severe Russian winter of 1941/42 portended disaster for Nazi Germany. And so just as the war took a turn for the worse in Africa, troubles mounted for the Third Reich on the Russian front to the East.

and the north shall trouble him; (Daniel 11.44b)

Following the defeat of the German Wehrmacht to the East in Russia, Hitler's next looming trouble came out of the North from an impending allied invasion of occupied France, from their staging area in Britain. It may be significant that even though Britain would have been identified as the "kingdom of the North" earlier, this imminent invasion was not from a single kingdom, but rather from a multinational force assembled on that island. Moreover, Hitler's problem at this time did lay to "the North", since France had been occupied by Germany, and the allied invasion of Europe was about to occur along that coastline.

therefore he shall go out with great fury to destroy and annihilate many. (Daniel 11.44c)

After extensive planning and buildup, a coordinated attack was made by the allies into Normandy on June 6, 1944, and by the Russians from the East. This created warfare over the entire mainland of Europe probably more intense than has ever been experienced in the history of mankind. The allied forces found themselves pitted against one of the best trained armies the world has ever seen, fighting for its very survival. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers fell in combat as these forces clashed in battles that would decide the fate, not only of Europe, but also of the world. And even as this mortal struggle progressed, Hitler's insane obsession to eradicate the Jews from the face of the earth continued at an ever accelerated pace in the death camps throughout all of Nazi Europe.

And he shall plant the tents of his palace between the seas and the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and no one will help him. (Daniel 11.45) Although this verse was most literally fulfilled at the time of Antiochus, the ultimate defeat of Nazi Germany was also inevitable as the allied armies converged upon Berlin. During the final "death rattle" of Nazism, Adolph Hitler was holed up in a Berlin bunker, finally committing suicide.

CONCLUDING REMARKS

The correlations between World War II and the chief personality who orchestrated it, with specific End Times Bible prophecies in both the Olivet Discourse and Daniel, seem too absolute to require additional evidence, so they are simply left for the reader to evaluate and judge. Rather, it may be of some value to reflect on two final questions that might remain in the minds of readers.

  1. Why does the Bible apparently employ two sets of prophecies, i.e. those in the Olivet Discourse and in Daniel, to describe the same End Time event, i.e. why was this final End Time event, setting  the stage for Israel's return to their inheritance, not completely forecast by a single prophecy?

    Consider the following historic patterns:

  1. Just as the Roman abomination and tribulation was the event that took the Jews out of their inheritance, there had to be an End Time event to precipitate their return. In order for Israel's historic pattern to be repeated, that event had to come in the form of severe persecution, for when they were likewise out of the promised Land in Egypt in Old Testament times, it was persecution at the hands of the Egyptian pharaoh that indirectly enabled their return. Thus, an End Time desecration had to be repeated while they were still outside of their inheritance to indirectly enable their 20th century return.

  2. In addition, Israel's historic pattern required that this End Time event also had to be perpetrated by a wicked despot while they were still under Gentile subjection. Since the notoriously evil Antiochus Epiphanes had a record that would undoubtedly win him the "honors" in that category, the final End Time personality had to also have a record against the Jews similar to that of Antiochus.

Thus World War II became an amalgamation of both the Roman and Antiochus desecrations, timed and conducted in a manner that replicated these historic patterns.

  1. Is it possible that World War II was not the final manifestation of the Olivet Discourse and Daniel prophecies, but that there remains some future event that will even more completely fulfill them?

For this question to be advanced in a believable way, it would require that someone envisage a future scenario to surpass the Holocaust against the Jews, have a greater worldwide impact than World War II, be perpetrated by an individual more evil than Adolph Hitler, and be executed in a way that would more precisely fulfill the military campaign prophesied in Daniel. If this could be done, it would then need to be demonstrated how its timing with respect to the Jubilee, Levitical and 360 day calendars, coupled with the historic pattern suggested by  Israel's Redemptive Timeline, would better fulfill the prophetic provisions required for this End Time event.

Satisfying these requirements will surely prove to be a daunting task, because I believe it will be possible to show in the following section of "The Prophets Speak" that Israel's 1948 rebirth in the Land should have been a one-time prophetic event, never to be repeated, on the basis of specific prophecies in the Old Testament regarding the number of times Israel should be taken out of the Land, then returned before the Millennial Kingdom is set up.

Consequently, it is felt that a reasonable next step is to build on our present findings, by trying to understand why the September 1 starting date for World War II, and the historic pattern indicated by Israel's Redemptive Timeline, seem to require that World War II be connected, in some manner, with the Jubilee 1995 timeframe.
